Experienced higher education administrator and percussion advocate with a demonstrated history of student success. A strong academic leader and professional with a Doctor of Musical Arts focused in Percussion Performance from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Currently serving as Vice President of Academic Affairs at GateWay Community College in Phoenix, AZ
Dr. Tom Nevill currently serves as Vice President of Academic Affairs (VPAA) at GateWay Community College in Phoenix, AZ, and has over 20 years of distinguished higher education experience in executive, administrative, and faculty roles. In the VPAA role he serves as the Chief Academic Officer and is an integral part of the president's leadership team, and is responsible for the strategic planning, organization, and administration of academic programs and related support activities that serve the needs of the diverse student body at the college. His portfolio encompasses a wide array of academic programs, including but not limited to: healthcare and nursing, automotive, business, industrial technology, literacy, languages and literature, arts, humanities, social and behavioral sciences, math and science, trade and technical training, beauty and wellness and water technology. Additionally, this role oversees critical functions including the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Employee Development (CTLED), community partnerships, dual enrollment, Counseling, the Learning Center, and the Library. The VPAA leads a functional area with six direct reports, over 300 employees including residential and adjunct faculty, and administers a budget of nearly $20 million.
Prior to joining GateWay, he served as the Vice President of Academics at Butler Community College in El Dorado, KS, where he provided direction and guidance for faculty and staff to foster academic excellence and led the college-wide initiative to be the first Adobe Creative Campus in Kansas (50th in the world) to enhance digital literacy and fluency for students and staff, leading to the 2021-2022 Innovation of the Year Award from the League of Innovation in Community College. Dr. Nevill was the founding Dean of Arts & Digital Media at Austin Community College in Austin, TX, with prior administrative experience as Dean of Arts & Humanities at Pima Community College in Tucson, AZ, and Division Chair (dean equivalent) of Business, Creative and Performing Arts at Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown, NC. He was Chair of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) accredited Department of Music and founded the internationally recognized Percussion Studies Program at the University of Texas at Brownsville while achieving the rank of Associate Professor of Music with Tenure. During his time at UTB, he was a two-time finalist for the UT Regent’s Outstanding Teaching Award, was the recipient of the NISOD Excellence Award, and created the first Mexican Marimba band in the US for college credit, served on the faculty senate and as a member of the graduate faculty.
Dr. Nevill received his Bachelor of Music degree from Eastern Illinois University and earned his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts in Percussion Performance from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).
